The first line-up of the Liberty Legion was formed by Bucky (I) after The Human Torch (I), Captain America (I), Toro and The Sub-Mariner were brainwashed by the Red Skull (I). After they rescued the Invaders and defeated by Red Skull (I) they stayed together to defend America from the Axis threat.

They later met up with Ben Grimm (The Thing) who had travelled to the past, together they fought and defeated Master Man, U-Man and Sky Shark.

A few weeks later, alongside The Invaders, they fight and defeat the Iron Cross (who is presumed dead).
