| Synopsis: Construction on
the Carmody Institute is almost complete, but C.I.A.
Agent Nick Fury tries to break in. He is stopped by an
almost completed Walkabout who recognises Fury by a
retina scan of his right eye. Walkabout takes Fury to
meet some other members of the new First Line - Effigy,
Oxbow and Pixie. Effigy greets Fury like an old friend, but Fury says he's never met Effigy - that is until Effigy shape-changes into his other form as White House Under-Secretary Jacob Scott. Upon finding out that Effigy is Scott, Fury goes mad and is only calmed down by meeting William Carmody. Under the Institute the Deviant Warlord Kro has assembled a strike force to stop an Eternal from encouraging "the humans" with their experiments in super-heroics. Nick Fury is talking to Carmody when the Deviants attack - they realise that Pixie is the Eternal they are after and go after her. Oxbow comes to her rescue, whilst other members of the First Line (Yeti, Rapunzel and Morph) arrive to lend a hand. It is during the battle between the First Line and the Deviants that Dr. Cassandra Locke arrives straight from the events in Issue #12. She watches Yeti attacking Skrulls and although she last saw him less than an hour before on a Skrull battlecruiser, for him it would be several years in the future. She discovers that the legends of Yeti in her time are correct and that he was a member of the First Line before the Rapunzel tragedy. Cassandra watches Under-Secretary Scott shape-change into the form of Effigy. As Effigy he joins the First Liners in defending the Carmody Institute from the Deviants. Warlord Kro watches the attack and refuses to let his Deviants withdraw, he decides eh would like to know more about the "super-humans". Hours earlier in Chicago, T. Ruth MacRae arrives home only to find her parents have been going through her room. Her father Fred questions her about the photographs of the Black Fox amongst her belongings, her mother uses her light-show powers to try to alter the moods of Fred and Ruth. Ruth has a row with her parents about violating her privacy and accuses them about keeping secrets (as they were Captain Hip and Sunshine). She leaps out of the third floor window and in the process reveals to her parents that she has super-powers. Her father tries to follow, but she's too fast and he loses her. Ruth ends up in a back alley and ends up in a corner - she beings to feel numb and in then turns purple. Meanwhile back in Maine, Dr. Cassandra Locke makes another log entry. She watches Walkabout retrieve Professor Carmody (in his homunculus) state from a secret compartment, she then proceeds to watch Walkabout "cyber-link" with Carmody and join the fray. Effigy prevents a Deviant from shooting Pixie in the back, he proceeds to ask her why they seem to be specifically targeting her - Pixie replies by saying she has never seen the attackers before in her life. Before Effigy can question her anymore Oxbow intervenes. It is at this point that Dr. Cassandra Locke makes her presence known. Before Cassandra can say anymore Morph reveals that Yeti is out of control. In order to calm him down Rapunzel cuts off some of her hair and gives it to him - this seems to have the desired effect. She then quickly grows some more hairs and uses it to trip up the remaining Deviants. The Deviants all try to escape back down the hole they made, but before they get there Oxbow fires an arrow in the direction of the hole and covers it with a metal net. Kro realises that the Deviants have failed him and so blow them up. Oxbow rips the metal net off the hole and Pixie flies down to see which Warlord was controlling the Deviants. She follows the hole but can find no sign of any remaining Deviant activity until she comes across an underground tunnel. Before she can follow the tunnel she is stopped by Oxbow. Upstairs Dr. Cassandra Locke explains to the remaining First Liners that she is an historian from the future and that her speciality is the cold war era. When asked for proof of these claims she replies by saying it would take years for certain events to take place and that there are many gaps in her records. Cassandra says that by explaining herself she runs the risk of triggering a divergent reality especially as she has already met Pixie in the future. She goes on to say that whatever the risk she had to come back to warn the First Line about the Skrulls. Upon hearing about Skrulls Effigy grabs Dr. Locke and asks her lots of questions about the Skrulls in the future. When asked about Skrulls by Walkabout, Effigy replies by saying he can't say anything as it's classified information. Dr. Cassandra Locke is still unsure whether to trust Effigy or not, in order to find out more about Effigy she makes another time jump into the past. As soon as she is gone the First Liners forget she had even been there. Nick Fury is debriefed by unknown persons about his experience with the new First Line. After the debriefing Tony Stark suggests to the other unknown persons that Nick Fury be considered for a more important assignment (Project S.H.I.E.L.D.). |
